There are a lot of people that have website that are not successful simply because they don’t know how to generate traffic and drive visitors to their site. Here are my top three methods that I use to generate website traffic.

1. Join and be active on Twitter

Twitter can be a goldmine for traffic if you use it correctly. First you need to sign up for a Twitter account for your business, keep this account separate from your personal account if you have one.

Use the search function and find people that are talking about your niche and ‘follow’ them. Don’t go overboard and follow too many people at once, you can start with 20 – 30 and then add another 20 – 30 each day. Soon many of those people that you follow will start following you. Continue to add more followers on a regular basis so you can build up the number of followers you have.

The biggest mistake people make when marketing with Twitter is that they just spam Twitter with links and only links. When you have a number of followers on Twitter they don’t want to just see links in your status, if that’s the case they will soon stop following you.

In fact I suggest you don’t include a link every time you update your status, instead just give a helpful comment relating to your niche. You can also ask a question every now and then and this can lead to a number of responses and help build a relationship with your followers.

Then on occasion add a link to your comments for your followers to visit your website. Used correctly Twitter is an amazing tool for website marketing but you must use it correctly or it will be of no use at all.

2. Start a blog relating to your niche

Blogs are great and the search engines love them. Blogs are easy to set up and easy to update and the more you update your blog with good quality content, the better rating they will get in the search engines.

Having a blog and updating it regularly and including links back to your main website is a great way to bring new targeted traffic to your site. You can target a number of different keyword phrases relating to your niche and rank for each phrase bringing you more traffic for different search terms.

There is no limit to how many blogs you can create and you can have several in the same niche and spread over different blogging platforms. You can set up a blog using Blogger, Wordpress, Weebly, Tumblr, Soulcast and Livejournal. Each of these platforms allows you to create a free blog and each time you post to these blogs you are adding more backlinks to your website.
