Gender discrimination at the workplace is a fact of life that people have to deal with. Although there are laws against gender discrimination, they aren't always followed to the letter in reality. You shouldn't lose hope however because there are ways to avoid it, and proving yourself to be worthy of the promotion you are vying for has certainly nothing to do with your gender.

The very first step in avoiding gender discrimination when vying for a promotion starts with you. You must adopt a mindset that allows you to believe in yourself regardless of your gender. Remember that you can't demand from people what you yourself don't feel strongly about. Thus, you shouldn't use your gender as an excuse for not doing a certain task or obligation with excellence and superb quality worthy of that promotion or for admiration among your peers.

Proving yourself at work

There is nothing that can replace good work ethics. If you are having a hard time with officemates who consider your sex a disability then you should use it as fuel to be good at what you do. Moreover, you must continuously improve with your work and excel in it despite the everyday challenges presented to you.

There may be times when you feel that you aren't getting that much-deserved attention or recognition but you must also bear in mind that this isn't an excuse to lower your productivity rate. For all you know, you are being observed and graded and a promotion and being considered if your superiors see your steadfast commitment in your job. So don’t sweat the small stuff and continue the good that you do.

Another way to show your peers that you are deserving of a promotion is by making sure you are able to get along with them regardless of your personal differences. Conflict at work is often unavoidable but professionalism is something that you can control.

Remember that you can make a difference at your work place and often this is what merits a promotion. Furthermore, you can stand out at work by doing what you think is right despite the difficulties and limitations presented. Be conscious of how you spend your time at work and office gossip should be the least of your concerns.

Most importantly, don't try to get ahead of others by stepping on them or by sacrificing your personal values. A promotion isn't worth any evil or unethical act and in fact, that could very well ruin your chances for a promotion.

Keep Abreast with Industry Trends and Get That Promotion

Do you know a common denominator among people who get promoted?

No, it's not only because they are more willing to work overtime or that they've dressed the part of manager or assistant vice president – it's because they're updated. That's right, they keep abreast with industry trends and know what's happening around them. Armed with this knowledge, they can approach situations and adapt accordingly. That's why bosses notice them and they, not anybody else, get the promotion.

Why you too, should keep abreast with industry trends

Industry trends are a good indicator of where your business is going and what you can expect in business months or years to come. Not only that, trends will help you design and plan your strategies to help you take advantage of the market when it's doing well or survive if it's not. People who keep abreast with industry trends are seen as informed members of the organization, they are also viewed as valuable assets who can help steer the company towards growth and stability.

How to keep updated with industry trends

Now that you understand the relevance of industry trends concerning your promotion, here's how to get started:

Read.

The best resources for industry trends are newspapers and trade magazines. People who are assigned to write for these papers have access to your industry's experts and gurus. If you want to increase your chances of getting promoted, spend at least one hour each day reading articles and news stories about your industry. If there are write-ups that you think might be relevant later on, cut them out and keep them organized in a folder or album. You can refer to them later when you're trying to find ideas on making a business proposal.

Join trade fairs and conventions.

Think trade fairs and conventions are just show-and-tell events? Think again. There are lots of gossip and info going around that you'll find very valuable sources of industry trends. Many participants and speakers in these events are industry insiders and they can tell you which industry trends to watch out for and which ones to ignore.

Be a member.

If you work in an industry that's big enough, you can help your promotion along by becoming a member of associations and clubs. Find out which clubs in your industry are operating in your area and join one or two. These clubs are good sources of industry trends because they try to keep as updated as possible in order to remain attractive and competitive to members. They also let their members in on the trends through club updates and newsletters.
